One way that Barack Obama, the US president, could build support for his economic agenda is by putting more Americans back to work. Many forecasters expect the US unemployment rate to hit 10 per cent this year.

But the jobless level is already higher in major cities and some states, including California, home to one in every nine Americans.

Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman examines the scramble for scarce work in the city of Los Angeles.

Northern Cali here... 15 months unemployed and counting.  I have an amazing resume including Intel, VP of an international travel company, etc. I must have sent out 300+ resumes and received not a single call back. I finally gave up about 3 months ago before things really hit the fan... now it really feels like there is zero hope. Can't really imagine it getting much better any time soon, either.

The only thing I have left is my ability to play poker profitably enough to barely get by.

here's a thought -- if you cant find a job -- start your own company! consulting, etc. lots of companies arent hiring cause they are outsouring and using consultants for one time jobs instead of being people on payroll and paying for their social security, payroll tax, etc. etc. i suggest people go the self-employment route and its a lot better and more freedom than working for the "man".

My wife and I rent a home in fl. We can handle are bills here. Now my wife want to sale everything and move to cali and life with family until we find work. I'm I wrong for thinking here CRAZY?HELP!

easy. get ready of all those bad politycians,bring and invite all the companies that want to invest,give them everything they need to star a bussines dont tax them and build infraextructure,abolish the tax on property such as homes, transportation building,education health and basic necesities such as water fone light and gas,abolish the gast tax for u transportation and cancel the tax to cover u naked bodies, finally rise the minimum wage to

$25, this will end and fix all this problems
