Marc-André Hamelin - Étude IX d'après Rossini (1987)
after La danza (no8 from Les soirées musicales)
Thomas Ang, piano
----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Hamelin's own notes to his CD release:
"[...] I think I must have inherited a double-note gene! Double notes of any kind usually pose thorny problems, but they also yield textures of uncommon richness, and somehow it was my thought that this could be applied to Rossini's wonderful song La danza. [...] Poor Rossini is subjected to sudden major-minor shifts, melodic inversions, a tune that starts a third too high, blue-note chords, and what amounts to something of a full-blown epileptic seizure towards the end. [...]"
Hamelin's set of études contains a good number of pieces needing constant double-note motion (witness: Coma Berenices, passages in the Omaggio, the distorted "Black Key" étude, and large parts of the Minuetto and Prelude & Fugue). But none other comes as tightly written as this gem: one of the earliest written, it is also one of the most well known. Those familiar with Rossini's original will note the many touches of humour in here - a hallmark of Hamelin's compositions.

insane! amazing technique, and most passages are well presented, especially the main theme and its repetitions, but as alkanian said, some passages seem to get steamrolled a bit, you could bring them out a bit clearer. still, bravo!
