Turks Protest Islamist AKP in Karsiyaka, Izmir, Turkey

People in Karsiyaka, Izmir, have peacefully demonstrated against the Islamist AKP government's non-secular practices highlighted recently by attempting to change the Turkish Constitution to allow women to wear turban in public places such as universities.

Once this is accomplished, it is no secret that all government institutions will allow women to wear turban and even veil and burka. AKP parlimentarians have already publicly stated that they will allow girls in primary and secondary schools also wear the turban and veil.

It is widely believed that no women will escape the wrath of Islamist government and the self-declared mullahs and "morality police" will force people to follow strict Islamic sharia rules if AKP acts as it wishes.

The Karsiyaka protest started at the tomb of Zubeyde Hanim, mother of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, which is located in Karsiyaka, Izmir. Thousands then walked through the Karsiyaka Carsisi (downtown district) where shopkeepers supported the demonstration. The event, organized by Yurtsever Yurttaslar Platformu, gathered more than ten thousand participants.

The demonsatration ended at Karsiyaka's Constitution Square after several women gave speeches against non-secular practices of the ruling AKP government and its supporter MHP party, which switched its policy to support the sharia rule with the hopes that it will gain more votes. Such is the state of sad turn of events Turkey faces today.

Today people in Eskisehir in western Turkey also protested government's anti-secular actions. The event is organized by ADD (Ataturkcu Dusunce Dernegi) and CYDD (Cagdas Yasami Destekleme Dernegi), two progressive, indepent NGO groups in Turkey.

NGOs in Turkey have gathered under the umbrella organization of Ulusal Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları (STK or NGO) Birliği (Association of National NGOs) which includes the following organizations:

Completely fake views. AKP is the most democratic, pro-western government Turkey has ever seen. The genocidal, nationalist-socialist (Na-zi) political party, CHP has committed many crimes against humanity including the Dersim massacre. The founders of CHP are also the founders of Ittiat-Terakki which was the perpetrator of the events of 1915 which is also widely considered as genocide.
