Herring spend most of their lives in the ocean. But the survival of the species depends on their leaving the sea, swimming upstream to spawn in the fresh waters where they were born. Now, through early June, the fish seem like flashes of silver, swimming and jumping within the banks of New England rivers and streams. In Massachusetts alone, they fill up about 100 herring runs in Weymouth, Plymouth, Pembroke and many rivers in between.
