The waterbuck, as its name suggests, lives near water. Usually in open forest areas. Waterbucks are mainly grazing animals, but also the occasional leaves. They often wade through the water and are good swimmers.
Giraffes eat the leaves of the higher parts of the tree.
They can reach heights of some five metres. The South Africans refer to this animal as 'camel horse'. Giraffes live in the bushy savannahs. Their favourite diet consists of acacia leaves.
Although rare, female giraffes can give birth to twins.
Giraffes do not have a specific mating season. The females give birth to a young almost every year, which they then defend vehemently against predators. Yet, giraffes do fall victim to lions, particularly the old and ill ones. A healthy giraffe is a difficult prey. It is a fast runner, and a lion can only keep up the pace for a short time.
Because of the fence, the animals cannot leave Kruger Park.
The most important reason for this is to avoid infection of farmers' livestock with foot-and-mouth disease. In a herd of wild animals, there is always a risk that a small percentage of the animals is infected with this disease.
