Barb DiGi shares the educational background of Alice Cogswell before she met Thomas H. Gallaudet. Barb attended the Deaf History Conference at Gallaudet and gathered fascinating facts that changed the whole picture of Alice Cogswell who was once thought to have little or no ability to read and write before meeting Gallaudet. Please refer to David Evans's journal to read more about it.
Please note that Lydia Sigourney started her teaching career at the age 16 but was 23 years old when she had Alice Cogswell. Also Alice Cogswell died in the year of 1830, not at the same time as Thomas H. Gallaudet died.
Do you know if Alice has a name sign? I've been looking all over the internet and haven't had any luck...

I am not even sure if a name sign was even invented for her at that time. As for the community adopting a name sign for her, I am not aware of it at this point. If you ever find out, please let me know :-)

I see that you may not know ASL...I have posted transcripts in my blog :-) just simply go to deafprogressivism(dot)blogspot(dot)com and look for the same title in my archives then click..there you will see David Evans who wrote a summary and several links to read about what I just explained and you will see comments for discussion. Enjoy!
