I remember hearing about this right after I took a week of vacation there. Montauk is gorgeous though!

Not a shelf cloud or a wall cloud. Shelf clouds are part of super cell thunderstorms and you would see the rest of the storm. This above cloud is detached from any other type of cloud. Additionally, the cloud is rotating and shelf clouds don't rotate. Finally, wall clouds are nowhere near as big as this cloud is and usually appear as a "foot" dropping down from another cloud. This is in fact a roll cloud, which are harmless, but are fascinating to watch. Great video footage!!

Seen some pretty weird weather out there over the years. Ultra dense fog banks that come out of nowhere on a sunny day. So thick it was hard to breathe and it smelled like iodine / burning metal. Slight yellowish tinge, but that could have been caused by the color of the sunlight.
Just really weird things happen out there. -- Dave. (Long Island, NY)

Glad to see that you got back in safely. The Coast Guard took off like a shot so I assumed that there were going to be folks in trouble on the water in that storm.

They were amazing. Even longtime Montauk residents were in awe....
