My Packaging for Broadcast Design professor assigned us a project to re-brand the soap opera "The Young and the Restless" and produce a new show opening based on our branding ideas. I choose to brand the show based on the familiar things in the TV viewing room that a typical viewer might have around them or want to have around them for comfort. These are items that help project the viewer into the fantasy life of the television drama. By focusing on these familiar items, I feel that it would help make the viewer feel more like a part of the show. The familiar items include chocolates, flowers, drinks and candles. I alternate the titles with a wooden background, similar to the surface of a coffee table. I wanted to give the footage a nostalgic look without using an old film technique, so I blurred the footage gently and boosted the color levels to give the sequence a dream like feeling.
I wanted to give the program a more modern feel to the branding, so I wanted to use "Young + Restless" in the titles. My teacher (and the class) thought that the change was was too drastic, (although the assignment guidelines said we could make any changes). They made me use "the young + the restless". They felt that the use of no capital letters achieved the modern look I wanted to achieve. From the people that I know that watch the show they don't use the "the" when they talk about it. In this world of text message short hand, I still think that calling it "Young + Restless" would be a more modern way to brand the program. It would help differentiate the program from other soap operas available for the viewer to bring into their lives.

  • That is what we do at SCAD. Check out their website and look for broadcast design department.

  • Interesting! I did not know that an opening sequence of a soap could become part of a professor's project! What did the others create?
