I spent a night hardly able to sleep,Thinking of this,obviously point of contact with earth is their feet.If these and rest of legs acted as antenna,A kind of radar, to detect movement of worms is possible,it could only be very short range due to density of soil/bare or short grass only[.No need] if worms plentiful.Short hops give fresh scan wide range not necessary.Radar/sonar used by a variety of species maximization of potential seems to be a law of nature.[Theory only] Regards, wisfull.

Hi firstly thanks for your kind comments, I like the idea of being like a Victorian Gentleman Naturalist. I must admit there are times I feel old enough to be from the Victorian era.

As I understand it, Birds stamp their feet in a way that mimics the sound or more precisely the vibrations of raindrops falling.  Also as birds have eyesight that is twenty times better than ours the see the heads of the worms as the break the surface. People much more clever than I have worked all this out.

Not Victorian Georgian, And Hello

Something that has puzzled me for years.How are these birds,So efficient at finding worms?Instinct tells them softer fertile soil, Especially after rain,That [ I think ] is why they like Spring and summer showers.They often sing while it is still raining an easily obtained meal The song is also to tell others,This is my territory,Yet i know there is something, i am missing, Their eyesight is very sharp and head very near to the ground.[but it is not enough] I must watch and think more! wisfull.
