(Well I've only watched the movie once so some of this might be wrong) He and his cousin were fishing or something, and his cousin found the ring at the bottom of the lake (After falling in) and they both fought over it, thus, gollum killing his cousin (I don't know what his name was but he was human once) and then he put it on and went insane. And boom, transformation into a gollem.
