These crashes resulted in 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses. Additionally, there is no test for determining sleepiness as there is for intoxication, which leads to under reporting of drowsy driving. Driving drowsy remains a dangerous problem to drivers and to all members of society and is rarely addressed as a public health problem.
