Adrian Brett play Scarlet Ribbons
sung by Cliff Richard, Perry Como , The Cats, Sinéad O'Connor etc.
"Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair)" is a popular song.
The music was written by Evelyn Danzig, the lyrics by Jack Segal, at Ms. Danzig's home on Long Island. The song was published in 1949.
The song is a supernatural tale of a little girl, who is very sick, praying before she goes to bed that God please send her some "scarlet ribbons" for her, as a dying wish. hair. Her father happens to peek in her room and hear his daughter praying to God for the ribbons. Since it is very late, no stores are open in their town, nor is there anywhere or place where the Father can obtain the ribbons for his Daughter, before she wakes up. He is very distraught throughout the night, worrying. Just before dawn he again peeks in his Daughter's room only to be amazed that laying on her bed are many beautiful "scarlet ribbons". He states that if he lives to be 100, he will never know from where the ribbons came.
"Scarlet Ribbons" has become a standard, with many recorded versions. The song has appeared on several Christmas albums.
The song was an early 1950s hit for Jo Stafford and Harry Belafonte. The most successful single record version, by The Browns (Jim Ed, Bonnie and Maxine) reached #13 in December 1959.
1979 Echoes of Gold
My parents used to play the Echoes of Gold album incessantly. Thank you for reminding me of the sheer, crashing banality of my childhood after all these years.
