Synopsis:
Siamo a Ferrara, negli anni che preludono la Seconda Guerra Mondiale; anche in Italia sta per prendere il via la politica antisemita. Giorgio (Lino Capolicchio) un amico d'infanzia di Micol Finzi-Contini (Dominique Sanda) frequenta insieme ad altri amici ebrei il giardino della lussuosa villa dei Finzi Contini, un'antica e aristocratica famiglia ebraica, si susseguono vicende quotidiane, amori ed equivoci sentimentali. Quando Giorgio confessa il suo amore a Micol, lei lo respinge senza svelargli il vero motivo, che è il fatto di essere attratta da un giovane italiano comunista, Giampiero Malnate (Fabio Testi), amico comune, con quale segretamente ha stretto una relazione. La crisi di Giorgio, quando si sente tradito in amicizia ed in amore, viene travolta nelle vicende storiche della persecuzione razziale fascista, divenuta pressante con la seconda guerra mondiale.

Il film vince l'Academy Award per Best Foreign Language Film e altri 25 premi internazionali

In the late 1930s, in Ferrara, Italy, the Finzi-Contini are one of the leading families, wealthy, aristocratic, urbane; they are also Jewish. Their adult children, Micol (DOMINIQUE SANDA) and Alberto, gather a circle of friends for constant rounds of tennis and parties at their villa with its lovely grounds, keeping the rest of the world at bay. Into the circle steps Giorgio (Lino Capolicchio), a Jew from the middle class who falls in love with Micol. She seems to toy with him, and is attracted to one of his friends Giampiero Malnate (Fabio Testi). While the love of Giorgio cannot seem to break through to Micol to draw her out of her garden idyll, the forces of politics close in.
The film is based upon Giorgio Bassani's novel of the same name.
