An unlikely and mesmerizing Beguine--in the Brit style. Anne Shelton's dusky voice teamed with the Bert Ambrose Orchestra make this a gem worth rediscovering...

Written by Jack Popplewell and Michael Carr (Recorded in November, 1941).

YOU'RE IN MY ARMS

You're in my arms and I thrill to your touch while we're dancing,
You look as sweet as the music the violins play,
I'm so foolish to cling to a thing that's no longer entrancing,
You're in my arms and a million miles away.

You're in my arms but you heart's far away while we're dancing,
Lost in a world of its own where I've no right to stray,
Why do I still pretend there's no end to our lovely romancing?
You're in my arms and a million miles away.

Wasn't it yesterday you whispered "I love you so"?
Or, was it yesterday a million years ago?

You're in my arms and I gaze in those eyes while we're dancing,
Deep in your heart I can see that our love's had its day.
So, I'll just say "Farewell", it was sweet--it was swell--while it lasted,
Bring down the curtain, we've come to the end of the play,
You and your love are a million miles away...

  • Gracie is not forgotten believe me... nor the murmurs against her marriage to an Italian National. They faded with the completion of WWII but never completely went away. And let me remind you that Dame Vera went to the forgotten 14th in Burma, to sing and to talk and to assure them that by her at least and by all their loved ones, they were not forgotten.

  • @tonytanner1 I agree but I have to remind you it was Gracie Fields, who sang on the front lines raising vast amounts of cash for spitfires. Anne Shelton Vera Lynn kept the home forces moral up. I thought the same till I read about Gracie and her fantastic war work visiting almost every theatre of war world wide. Anne shelton and Gracie shared a dressing room for the 1978 Royal variety show, pity Anne did not get the reconition she so richly deserved.

  • Those who like this lady should look for Dorothy Carless and her songs with Geraldo. They should neither one of them be forgotten, nor should their contribution to British morale through the dark years of W. War II. Add to this list Dame Vera Lynn, who took her clear spirit and great voice to the front lines, to cheer the troops in person. Three great talents. Three great ladies.

  • Very nice voice, song and arrangement. The band sounds great... Thank you for posting.

  • Beautiful song... but for the sad lyrics... the first two lines leading one to think otherwise... Thanks for the unique contribution.

  • Anne made some great songs into the 1960s but we just dont have access to them can anyone help with this.

  • Brilliant and beautiful Anne Shelton, knew just what to do with a song, and always delivered, no wonder Ambrose favoured her

  • Great Great Great song and singer.

  • Wasn't sure at first, now I find her strangley beguiling. One of our finest singers

  • I simply love her rich contralto, she sang with such expression yet in an understated way.
