It's amazing that he could just pick up a trumpet and play those notes right after playing trombone. Truly a genius. RIP, man.

38b is correct... MF is playing Valve Trombone. The Superbone was created in the 70's by MF an Holton/Leblanc when they also designed the MF Horn, (a VERY large bore trumpet as opposed the Conn Constellation he played earlier which was medium bore) and played a Jet-tone mouthpiece for many years. He later went with Dave Monet for his equipment.

Calicchio made that mouthpiece in '56. MF played with that piece all thru the " Roulette " years.

MF played a 38b, which is a rather small bore, .438 to be exact, with a mouthpiece made for him by Dominic Calicchio , a shallow V cup, which is now owned by Roger Ingram. Sometime in the early 60s he switched to a Giardinelli, you can see it in " Plays Jazz For Dancing " album cover.

The one and only. It is a priviledge to be able to see these old clips and know where it all started. A prodigy no doubt.

To say Maynard has skills is the understatement of the century. What an incredible band. There is no band like this today anywhere I know of.
