Did u ever figure this out?
I have the same erratic cursor problem...but in windows. I DID work fine, but one day it randomly crashed, and F!@#ed up all the touch software. I recovered the system, but have not been able to get the touchscreen to function properly ever since. Also I get a com port error on com 1 and 2 in device manager.

I have the same POS, what i did was installing the base system of debian in a computer. Then I bought an adapter for the mini ide conector of the POS (like 8 dollars) and I connected the HDD.
Eye:
1) I erased the lines in /etc/rules.d/ 70-persistent-net.rules
2) I manually installed the firmware e100 (just downloaded the firmware in a USB, and copied to /lib/firmware/e100
By the way, is working very fast with XFCE
HARDWARE: Celeron 600 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 20GB Hdd

@samyraimy screen prompt says Touch the screen two times to
enter Setup appears, touch three times. This causes
the system to bypass the BIOS Setup and go directly to the
Touch Screen Calibration Setup. With Pentium III/Celeron
terminals, you will not see this prompt if the Boot-Time
Diagnostics Screen is disabled, but you can still enter setup by
touching the screen three times.
Note: Setup can also be entered from the Boot Menu that is
displayed when you press ESC during POST.

Might be a clue here in user guide:
Installing a Serial Mouse
Follow these steps to install a Serial Mouse on the terminal.
1. Edit the boot.ini file, which is located in the root of the C drive.
Delete the text /NoSerialMice.
The Touch Screen can be calibrated using MicroTouch (Windows)
or Microcal (DOS), or it can be calibrated from the BIOS.
The Mouse uses IRQ 12 and so does the Touch Screen. Since the
Touch Screen serves as a mouse, it cannot be freed up unless you don't
want to use either.

I also have an old NCR 7401-2212 POS machine that I am trying to put linux or even embedded windows and I'm having issues with the boot up. The original HDD was pulled out and I put in a new one but it doesn't seem to boot up. Do you know of a way to access the bios?

i have the same problem in a same POS, but diferent OS, windows Millenium, i got the drivers, but they dont work, they can´t detect the touchscreen

I know this is an old post but If anyone else comes across this the answer is the driver. This is not a platform issue. Search for microtouch driver or 7401 ncr driver and you will find it.
