As a German American and bit of a purist when it comes to VW . Its good to see life breathed into these vehicles . These GM engines are plentifuful and provide both power and economy to a vehicle that was very underpowered. Excessive emmisions killed the aircooled engines . An 1.6 liter aircooled engine pollutes more than a 5.7 liter GM V8 .

But why would you bother putyting an American engine into a German car?
I'd go for a dead VW B4 over a working American V6 any day!!!
(GM and Ford shouldn't even be in this country in the first place).

carefull of the gearbox! i've blown a heap over the last 6yrs until i changed the ratio and put in stronger gears etc.
interested in seeing how you go with the heat in the engine bay with the radiator in there.
