This is the first live run with my new fly sparge set up. I've used a lot of different methods, and this is the latest. I like the idea of a rotating arm, better would be a sprinkler of sorts I'd imagine. My efficiency is around 80, and this is by far the weakest part of this system in terms of my brewing. The mashing is tight, the boil, the temps, Ph and water profile are all on, I just with my MLT had more points of drainage, that would catapult my efficiency I suspect. Perhaps a new MLT? As you can see, however, a bunch of dough has already been dumped into this project. Eh, 80 aint bad at all. It's a consistent 80-81 too, so I can get consistent results which is cool.

  • I had to take some copper pipe and sweat it together, and on one side there's a nipple I threaded on, and I clamped the sparge water hose onto it. Past the point where the actual arm hangs down, the rest of that pipe going across the top is just so I can have something to rest on the other side of the mash tun. It's simpler than it looks. Just took some imagination to make.

  • Where did you get that sparge arm and how is it working out?

  • @Dancingnuns It's working no problem. Sorry, the above post was meant to be a reply to you. This sparge arm works great for me, you don't want too much going down the sides, or it spreading unevenlny. This doesn't do either too much. Only thing is, it's hard to get a flow rate down so that you don't have to watch it. It goes too fast, or too slow. Have to turn it off and on.

  • It won't let me post the link. Search homebrew for less in google.

  • how did you make the sparge arm spin?

  • @rawtofu666 There are holes in the arm that are placed in such a way that all you need is a little bit of pressure and they move the arm themselves. If you increase the flow rate, it spins faster. You only need a few feet of gravity drop if you have a 2 or 3 tier system to get the arm to spin.

  • Is that "The Minibrew Minmash Sparge Arm?" is it 1/2" fitting? And what's it made out of?
