Water contamination reaches York, Nebraska city limits

The Atlas Missile Site 10, five miles west of York, was taken out of operation in 1964, only four years after its construction. What was left behind besides an empty silo, however, is groundwater contamination.
Several years ago, the investigation by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers began with a remedial investigation and feasibility study completed in 2002. Their findings -- Trichloroethene (TCE), a chlorinated solvent, was used at the site as a degreaser to clean out the residual fuel in the fuel lines. The release of TCE to the environment during the operation of the missile silo has resulted in TCE concentrations in groundwater that exceed the regulatory standard for protection of drinking water, which is five parts per million (ppm).
In April, the study concluded "the TCE impacts are located in groundwater beneath the missile silo and adjacent agricultural fields, and that no domestic water wells or municipal water wells are known to be impacted by TCE." However, approximately 21 private wells were tested by the Kemron Team (hired by the Corps), along Roads J and K, near their intersections with Highway 34, in order to watch for the spread of further contamination.

Rectify the situation? How in the HELL do you clean up 4 mile "plume" of conaminated ground water? What are you going to do? Dig up a MOUNTAIN SIZED AREA of dirt down to 300 ft for many many square miles and then what? Burry that dirt on the other end of the planet and then put it under a mountain where it wont hurt anything? Pish Posh!

Corruption i.e. mafia business saves money to keep funds past fifty years puts environment at risk.Wonder who owned the land had to do environmental assessment and clean up.Crooks only see money today never risk to all 50 years down the line.We need strong honest protocols.
