in my opinion one of the best albums of roxette! They tried a lot of new things and I still love almost all of the songs....Wish I could fly,you can´t put your arms around...,waiting for the rain, anyone, cooper, pay the price, starring at the ground and beautiful things are simply CLASSICS to me!!!
Ops .. forgot the midtempo ones LOL ... "It Will Take A Long Long Time" sounds nice but not impressive except for the "inganake leo" part that sounds beautiful but has not sence to me. The "modern rock version" soundes so much better than the original version. "Staring At The Ground" ... nice but also not that much impressive. Neither of these 2 made go "wow" but the latter's case the demo was far much better, I remember being angry "why did they change it to worse?" LOL
Should have this album had the variety of different directions it followed sounding so unfocused and incoherent? Maybe not. Should this album have been produced in a similar way to Per's solo "World According To"? Maybe really maybe. But hey ... 12 years after ... it's time enough to allow this album to have its say somehow despite mistakes and flaws and enjoy its music after all it has some great song and all it wants is for us to "have a nice day". That's not much to ask for! LOL
As for the other songs "Beautiful Things" remains next to "Crush On You" on my top notch favourite songs. What a splendid and so sad ending track. Marie was very much influenced by her own latests solo recording to bring the sound to this amazing song. I still love it so much. "Cooper" was a song I hard time to enjoy until I could finally sence the "CBB" similar vibes and realize that this was almost like a fairylate-song very misterious - hard to get it in first so therefore not easy to enjoy!
As for the ballads well ... too many actually compared to the uptempo they sounded more well done and crafted than the uptempos in my opinions. "Wish I Could Fly" remains for me a favourite whereas "Anyone" never really moved me that much. It sounded very "unfocused" and too "lame" compared to some of the best ballads they did. "Salvation" on the other hand sounded amazing and I still love it. Should they have been all released as singles? Hard question: I would have skiped "Anyone".
The funniest song of course has to be "You Can't Put Your Arms" because it sounds so silly-honest coming from a bad luck guy who just loses everything he has in life and deals it with a sence of humour. This song was the only time I actually appreciated the use of minimog.
Fans were torned back then: eletronica on Roxette? Love ir or hate it? While I had a hard time enjoying and getting used to "Stars" which remains the weirdest track on it., I however loved the remixes. Don't ask me why! LOL Crush On You was so damn addictive that the first time I heard it I had to relisten to it over and over and over again. I couldn't get enough. Not such a big fan of "/Twenty7" but I don't mind listening to it even now. The same feeling goes for "Pay The Price".
I agree that the album is contemporary to 1999 but in certain songs the productions went a big over the top and turning some songs into something fans would very hardly feel as sounding Roxette at all "Stars" is for me the best example. People said this album dealt with "techno" sounds whicha made me laugh. The least we could state is that eletronica was very much incorporated into some of the uptempo songs. "Pay The Price" was the only one to keep a much more pop rock sound from the past.
