Irina Arkhipova Sings "On The Hills of Georgia. " Poem by Pushkin, Music by Rimsky-Korsakov. The great Russian Mezzo-Soprano was named People's Artist of the Soviet Union in 1966. Here she sings a very well known art song, based on a Pushkin poem. Lyrics below, in both Russian and English:
На холмах Грузии лежит ночная мгла; The night mist lies on the hills of Georgia:
Шумит Арагва предо мною. Before me the river Aragva roars.
I am sad and yet at the same time calm
As in my despondency I feel no anxiety,
For my dark sadness is made light by you,
By you alone, I am full of you.
The heart burns and beats again,
Because it cannot, cannot love you.

  • Thank you for posting these fine old Russian Romances. Nice, that this amazing art constantly inspires and influences the people in different countries.

  • @Ivan85504 Thank you. I can testify that in the United States, there is an ever-increasing awareness of just how extraordinary, and how great, Russian culture is. Opera, ballet, literature...what a national patrimony!

  • A performance of the highest level!

  • She was a wonderful singer.

  • @Bivolari Thanks, Stephen. She sure was. Reminds me a bit of Marilyn Horne.

  • @EdmundStAustell Agree, my friend, he is always wonderful :-)

  • @BazzasBest Thank you very much. Yes, she is a wonderful singer!

  • @SuperLuckydream Thank you very much, Tamara. And thank you for the other translation. Pushkin is wonderful any way we translate him! I appreciate your comment.

  • The richness of this voice - along with its power and intensity - is an experience. How nice that Tamara has chipped in so that we two slightly different English interpretations to choose from.
