Just think how much he would have to hate someone to put himself through that. And to answer some of the questions that were asked in this thread, Scorpio couldn't go pick a fight somewhere to get this done because then there would be witnesses. As far as getting drunk, shooting up, etc., and throwing himself down a flight of stairs, doctors can tell the difference between a bruise from a punch and a fall. And if he was drunk or on heroin, they would find that out and it would raise suspicion.
