The Boys Choir of The Holy Trinity Church (Treenighedskirken) was founded by the organist, Per Günther, in 1964, three years after the church was consecrated. Until 1989 it functioned as the permanent choir at services in the church.
Only a few churches in Denmark have combined boys' and male voice choir. This type of choir was very common in the last century, but the tradition disappeared with the separation of the Latin Schools from the Church. To start and maintain this type of choir, which has its roots in a special choral tradition in Denmark, must therefore be regarded as a pioneer activity. Major choirs in England have formed the main source of inspiration, both in terms of music and organisation; the alto parts, for example, are sung by men, that is, by counter tenors.
After 25 years a new era began for the choir, when Per Günther resigned from his post as the leader of the choir. Since the city Esbjerg wished to preserve the choir and carry on the tradition built up over 25 years, the Municipality of Esbjerg, Treenighedskirken and the Academy of Music decided to cooperate to maintain it financially.
The choir takes part in services at the church about once a month, and the connection is regarded as very important, as the church tradition, both musically and in social terms, forms the foundation on which the choir is based.
