@EmilyGreene1984 Absolutely! (I didn't say that she didn't care.) There is a moment during this scene in the book when I think she suggests they get married and then instantly retracts it, because she understands that soldiers don't view gypsies that way, which is especially heart-breaking. She goes a bit nuts about him later on though, clinging to her feelings for him at the cost of her life . . .

@Amy3422 I don't think its because she doesn't care. I think its because that Esmeralda is so deeply infatuated with Phoebus that she can't bear the idea that he might be seeing another woman. In fact, in the book, it says it quite clearly. When Esmeralda was set to be hanged the first time, she saw Phoebus standing in a balcony with Fleur-de-Lys. She had a feeling that wasn't right, but she couldn't bring herself to think about it. Basically Esmeralda was intentionally in denial about Phoebus.

Esmeraldaa.... Falls when Frollo stabs. Sorry, it made me laugh.
Too bad he didn´t die. Although in some way it had been better if Frollo had stabbed Esme, the poor girl would have suffered less.

@malcom0000 because it is ;) but it is supposed to be frollo. just: this was the only way of having gringoire downstage for fatalité... since it's just a glimpse of a second where you could actually see it, they decided to do it this way. think i heard them talking about it in an interview once ;)

Aha :') !
Pheobus being a man of principle and code?
He's not exactly the typical hero - womanizing, gambling, drunk, and perpetually broke. And not very intelligent. The only reason Esmeralda likes him is because he fits her dreams of being taken by a lord and such.

In this song, I hate Phoebus the most because you finally see why Esmeralda would fall for him. In this musical, and in the book, it is easy to just go, "He's a jerk, stupid Esmeralda." But now he's poetic and my heart almost wants to melt, against my better judgement. You see -- of course a lonely naive 16-year old gypsy girl would love him. And he has some poetry in his soul; he can feel; he's not just a monster . . . which makes him more of one. :(
