On Wednesday 9 December 2009 members of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Select Committee of the New Zealand Parliament reported back to the House with recommendations that:
1. the government take the opportunity during bilateral talks with Iran to raise the government's concerns regarding human rights violations and the treatment of the detained members of the Yaran
2. the government consider co-sponsoring a Canadian resolution on human rights in Iran in the 3rd committee of the United Nations General Assembly
3. New Zealand lobby other countries in support of the Canadian resolution
