On May 12th, 2008 China was struck by an earthquake that has completely devastated vast areas of land, killing over 70 000 people and leaving 5 million homeless. A large majority of those affected are children, many of whom are now orphaned and homeless.
The majority of those affected by the earthquake are now living in temporary camps set up in the areas surrounding Chengdu. In the camps people are still struggling to deal with the grief of losing their loved ones, their homes and their safety. And with poor hygiene, inadequate supplies and as yet no real routine, they are restless and uncertain.
This period in the weeks immediately following the earthquake is crucial to the psychological health and recovery of these people. The Chinese government has recognized the urgency of this situation and is calling on qualified practitioners and organizations who can assist in the area to help immediately.
With Hua Dan's experience in rehabilitation programs and mental health, we believe we have a definitive role to play in helping the situation.
This trailer introduces the project and captures the initial phase of the first week of workshops. Each workshop's games and participatory theatre activities will help these children start:
-Feeling safe again
-Building trust
-Talking about their feelings
-Reconnecting with their sense of play
-Begin the process of healing
