Xplornet has received millions of tax dollars for rural broadband projects throughout Canada, tax dollars which need to be spent working toward a broadband solution rather than wasted on a bandaid.

Xplornet has attempted to evade the MINIMUM requirement for broadband by labeling its services as "upto". Until the CRTC forced Xplornet to disclose its "throttling methods" publicly they've been able to get away with under-serving rural Canadian's broadband internet. Now let it be clearly understood that hundreds of thousands of Canadian's previously thought to have access to Broadband internet are still being under-served. All fixed wireless customers of Barret Xplor with the exception of those on licensed frequency bands are receiving only 0.6-0.9Mb/s Minimum service level instead of a minimum 1.5Mb/s required by the Government of Ontario and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to qualify them as being served "broadband internet".

All Canadians ought to be outraged!

  • Hey 5010, I saw your post on the xplornet sucks forums long ago about creating your own DSL to Wireless backhaul. Just wondering whereabouts in rural ontario you are? I'm in the quinte region and am looking to do the same. 3Mbps "Expedience" radio from Xplornet and it SUCKS!

  • @techieauric I'm just north of you past Kingston - I've since set up 2 systems on contract for others to cover rural neighbourhoods and a larger system to cover my own area using silo's and a more robust wholesale internet connection. I realized the .gov or anyone else for that matter was not going to solve this problem, solving it for myself is one of the best things I have ever done.

  • Using tax dollars? lmao really? that's one of the "beefs" like Bell and Rogers do not? 'clearly they can break laws'...again...really? there are government agencies for just that reason...it is not hard to get good/decent service from these people...you just have to approach in a sensible way...I worked there for several years...first thing I can tell you is that you should know the equipment you're dealing with, its limitations and applications...and probably drop the conspiracy theories...

  • @KewlMoD

Xplornet is a whole different level even than Bell, and that's saying something.

I know perfectly well the limitations of wireless technology, specifically the Canopy crap that Xplornet pumped out from coast to coast. They over loaded too few towers without enough backhaul, Their network is crap and a waste of resources.

  • move to where there is dsl mr.programmer!!!!

  • @goosebumpshavana

Or better yet... Build my own microwave link to where there is DSL and cancel Xplornet :)

I've actually done that now. I find it extremely upsetting what Xplornet has done with our tax money but in the same breath, I'm not gonna sit around and wait for someone to make them provide the service they are suppose to either. I solved the problem for myself.

Great input though(sarcasm) moving is a bit EXTREME don't you think? shouldn't have to move just to get decent internet.

  • @XxMW3MLGxX

nope ! but i used to work for xplornet and let me tell you : its not worth it ! you have to pay an initial $ 50 ( non refundable) towards the system " upgrade" and if you want to sign a 2-year, 3 year contract, it will cost ya around $ 70- $ 89 bucks a month for a measly 30 GB monthly cap, the system itself is $ 499 !

  • @Doombot85 did you get the 4g satellite internet? please respond i want to know if it is good :)

  • @50ten Do you have an email address I can contact you at? I wouldn't mind hearing a little more about the rural neighbourhood coverage systems you have setup. I'm assuming you used MicroTik or Ubiquity equipment to do this? Anyway, like yourself I'm an IT Professional and wannabe BF3 gamer living in Rural ontario.

    Cheers

  • isp dont guarantee speeds
