IIN the end there are so many extenuating circumstances who are the best. Evert and Navratilova won the same number of Grand Slams singles titles. It was almost fated.
Oh, and too the point about who is better....if you won more of your matches, than any other player who ever played the game, wouldn't you think THAT person is history's best? She won more French titles male or female (everyone concedes is the hardest GS), more US Open matches male or female (101 wins) was in more grand slam semi's male or female, more consecutive matches on a single surface, clay (125) male or female...face it....she was, with out peer or prejudice, the single best player EVER
I had the complete luck to be in the stadium that day...super saturday...it was a hell of a day. There was something in the air that day, that most people that we chatted with in the stands thought it just might be Chris's day...and then, when she won that first set....the cheering was so unbelievably loud and supportive of Chris...it was hysteria! Though I was slightly worried when I saw her in Red...blue and red dresses never seemed lucky for her like yellow and pink...look at past wins 2c
@sftom1970 martina beat Chris in every Wimbledon final they ever played. This match here was tragic. Chris was playing the tennis of her life, the whole crowd was behind her, Martina was really having an off day, but in the end Chris just didn't couldn't shut the door on her opponent. She somehow didn't believe that she could beat Martina. A lot of that rivalry (the balance, in the end, going clearly to Martina) was mental.
@sftom1970 As Al Smith used to say,"Let's look at the record." Who won the most tournaments? Martina. Who won the most Grand Slam titles? Martina. Who won grand slams in singles and doubles ( the latter two years in a row together with Pam Shriver)? Martina. Who won the most Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles? Martina.Who "should" have won this match? I don't know. Who DID win this match? Martina. But, you're tight; her dominance is totally overrated.
I was just watching a clip of the 82' semi final at Wimbledon with Chris vs Billie-Jean. Amazing how much work Chris had done n her physical conditioning in the 2 years to here. Looks like a totally different physique and after having played for so many years, it showed what a unique champion she was that she was prepared to change herself to keep up.
Chris had improved but she still wasn't quite good enough at this point to beat Martina. You knew Martina would win but you also knew it would be close.
Chrissie definately should have won this match. These 2 women were totally amazing, their classic 3 set battles will always be remembered by everyone. What contrasting styles these 2 women had. Chrissie had grace and glamour with precision shot making with a brilliant tennis mind and Martina had sheer power and what an athlete! In my opinion the 2 greatest the world has ever seen. Their match entertainment value has never been (and will never be) rivalled. Tennis royalty!
love the close-ups mid rally. half expect it to go all matrix stylee on our asses- slow down and zoom in and then circle all around...
