To create dynamic shadows the source engine uses "texdatas" (or something like that) textdatas store a texture wich has on it the shadows the flashlight should cast, then that texture is taken from its textdata and it is projected where it's needed.

The thing is, Source engine works well with ANY hardware. If you have a bad pc, dont worry, you can reduce graphic quality and it will run smoothly. If you have a NASA pc , then activate super hd stuff for better experience. And most important, the source engine offers extreme flexibility, just take a look at those awsome mods like Nightmare House 2. That's why it will never get old, people will keep using it for their mods, while most engines literally die once there's a better one around. Sou

Technical question: what is that real-time shadow technic, what is used in Source engine?
-
@MrHaxman123 But yes in all other ways.
-
@veipper Not graphically though.

@veipper I'm rather fond of Unreal Engine 3, and the Gamebryo engine (FO3 and NV engine.) but I do love the Source engine.

Its a game(and engine) from 2004 mate ;)

Impresive engine but at 0:25 there's no rope shadow! So they must DIE!!!

@veipper Source is like the poor man's CryEngine. It, however can run on low end computer systems which is a definite advantage. Graphics and physics wise, CryEngine is better (welded Garrysmod props cause massive lag, and do not collide properly in some instances).
Source has it's update system, where old content can be reused with new parts of the engine, which Crytek only dreams of
But that's what you expect: source was made in 2004, and cryengine in 2007. I still love TF2

Source. The only engine that beats Cryengine.
