S.R.G. 131 Air Sea Helicopter has its own emergency. Calling Mayday to Newcastle International Airport with a suspected gear box problem and makes its own emergency landing. Based at R.A.F. Boulmer the helicopter is a regular site within the North east of England
These Seakings are known for relentless gearbox problems, especially the tail rotor gearbox. They have a sophisticated sytem that can even detect very small metal particles in the gearbox oil. They are costly to maintain and Boulmer have even robbed parts off the other one to keep the remaining one servicable. They have been in RAF service for 30 years now and should be replaced.
