Posted by Railway Performance Society - www.railperf.org.uk - This is a video clip of Eurostar approaching and passing TGV Nord station - Calais Frethun - and then heading towards the entrance of the channel tunnel. At the start of the film, the train is running at or close to 100mph.
The Video data was shot on a basic JVC DV camcorder. The GPS speed data was recorded by a Race Technology DL1 datalogger. Race Technology analysis software allows you to import and time align the video to their GPS data. With the help of the Google Map overlay, I was able to closely time align the two streams of data with the overbridges in the video. Once aligned, the software can create the complete video file with GPS overlay. Both the video and GPS data were recorded in 2006, but it is only now that the facility to merge the files has been added as a free option on the Race technology software. so here it is a few years after being first recorded.
When I was on this last week, my train was much much faster! Probably around 130-140mph.
