  • Have you ever tried an American Lock padlock? While the shackle is open the key will not come out until you close the shackle I was wondering if this will effect the shims effect

  • @nesbitt615 American lock padlocks design won't allow them to be bypassed by shims. Instead of a free spring loaded locking mechanism, they utilize round steel balls that move in and out of grooves in the plug of the lock. When the lock is closed, the balls rest against between a the shackle (partially in the groove) and the plug. When a key rotates the plug to the unlock position, it exposes grooves or "holes" that allow the shackle to spring open, pushing the balls into the opposing grooves.
