Hi everyone.
Today I'm going to tackle a very difficult subject in English studies. It's such a difficult matter that even more experienced non-native English teachers hesitate a lot before deciding to do it:

English Lyrics Transcription.

What do you do when you want to sing along an English song which lyrics you don't know yet - Just like the one you are listening to right now? You can try to hum or whistle to get in tune with it but the real meaning embedded in its lyrics you may never know lest you get it.

The main goal of todays class is to encourage not only English students but also non-native English teachers getting engaged with English songs lyrics currently not available either on printed materials or even on the so called inexhaustible source of learning - the Internet.

When doing lyrics transcription I usually follow the steps described ahead:

1- Get the song audio file, be it in mp3, wav or video format;
2- Start listening to the audio file and do it as many times as needed to get used to it;
3- Sometimes I have to change the audio playback pace so as to have more chances to determine which word or expression is being sung or said at the most difficult points;
4- When I'm tired of listening to the song and feeling sure of its content, I start the lyrics transcription itself;
5- If by any chance I do not get to a conclusive result, I try to get someone else's opinion, appraisal or any help on the job being carried out. This time I was lucky because I had met Dave Ellis himself along the job;
6- All checked, I make a video edition of the song to make it available to all the people who are eager to read it and securely sing along with the singer;
7- It can be useful if you get some images to illustrate your video, so as to help people better understand the lyrics content;
8- It's very important that you take into consideration some facts like singer's nationality, English background or accent, what may strongly interfere in your understanding of what is being sung or said in the song.

To carry out this wonderful job I usually make use of some helpful tools such as:
1- 1- Google search engine (or any other similar one;
2- Audio playback softwares (eg. Gomplayer, which also enables you to alter the playback rate of speed or pace);
3- Friendship allover the world, mainly in English speaking countries like the U.S.A. (thank you, Fred!), England and so on;
4- Video editing softwares like Camtasia Studio (the one I'm using this time), Windows Movie Maker, etc;
5- An Internet social network or video server, to broadcast your final job;
6- And eventually, a good knowledge of English, of course.

As a sample of this amazing job, I'm now going to show you the lyrics transcription of the song "So Many Tears" - by Dave Ellis. There were no records of this song on the Internet before this job I've just done, ON REQUEST. So let's listen to the song and sing long with the singer. I hope you like it.

Professor Laurindo

Dave Ellis (Fernando César) used to be one of the so called "brazucas" - the Brazilian singers who used to sing in English in the 70's.

So many tears
(Dave ellis)

"So many tears
I have cried living alone
Now I think of you my love
To him I can give my heart

When you're near me
I feel things I can explain
She's got my life in your hands
And all my love till the end

I don't want to remember
All those sad and lonely nights
When you are by my side

Now run your pretty fingers
Through my hands
Let's spread love and happiness
In the air
Let's share so much joy
With the rest of the world

Now run your pretty fingers
Through my hands
Let's spread love and happiness
In the air
Let's share so much joy
With the rest of the world"

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How did you like it? Pretty difficult task, isn't it? I hope you enjoyed it. And for those who come to criticize this job, let me tell you that you could have come before I did it, so as to do something better to the English learning community.
See you all later...
