Vintage Burbank Benge 3X+ MLP from 1968 (MLP .464) from 1968 Another fine playing vintage horn, these horns are great for playing lead. Nice and bright with out being harsh or strident. The Medium Large Plus .464 bore lets you blow with lots of air for maximum sound! No dents or dings. The silver for the most part is good. There are some solder scars most notably on the receiver and the 3rd slide. Don't let that full you, This is a player! More pictures available upon request. In 1953, Benge retired from playing, resigned from the orchestras that he played with in Chicago, and moved to southern California. He continued making trumpets in his garage in Burbank, located at 1122 W Burbank Blvd. Elden Benge was killed in a car accident in front of his house in 1960, and his son Donald then ran the company. The production was around five per week or 225 horns per year prior to 1960 and increased to twenty-two horns per week from 1960 to 1971.

Elden Benge began his professional trumpet career in the 1920s and
was principal trumpet in the Detroit Symphony from 1928 until
1933 at which time he took the same position in the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra. During these years he experimented with
trumpet design and began building complete trumpets by 1935. He
had played French Besson trumpets up to the time that he made his
own which are closely modeled after them.

  • Steve isn't the Benge 3xp the model trumpet that Herb Albert plays?

  • @tennesseetrumpet

That I don't know....... I'll look into it and get back to you.

  • Is it Mark's # 10 backbore, or his # X10 backbore? I ask because on his website, he lists the # X10 as the BB for his Star,DE, ZM, and 600 series cups (his commercial cups) and you had mentioned previously that your backbore was Mark's commercial backbore. Thanks for your time!

  • Hi John,

You are correct it is marked X 28. Made for me in 1999 when I was out with Anka. I loved the sound of that back bore so much that I scavenged it from the piece Mark made for me and have used it on different cups for the last 12 years. the only markings are "X 28" it has a slight weighted taper to the shank. Hopes this helps....

  • Nice horn Steve. Not to be a nerd, but I don't recognise that mouthpiece blank. What brand and size mouthpiece did you use on this clip? (As usual, you sound great).

  • @johnmohanmusic

    Hi John,

    Nerdy questions are encouraged! :o)

That is a Kanstul copy of Arturos Mt V. Bach 3c with a zippy Curry #10 Backbore with a 28 hole.

  • great @horntrader

  • Ah, I think you can disregard my question: It's the Kanstul Mt Vernon 3C top on the Curry commercial BB you described on the Schilke B3 clip when I asked you about it there 6 months ago.

I had remember the Mt Vernon 3C part of your answer but forgot about the Curry Backbore part of the answer. Blame it on too many high notes, old age or a combination of both...

  • @Dutranator

That horn is selling for $1250 on the Horntrader website.

    Stay Tuned,

    Steve

  • how much $??
