It has been revealed that Kinect will be available for Windows PCs from 1 February 2012.

What makes Kinect for Windows any different to its console predecessor? It has a "near mode" for use up close - a new firmware where the depth camera can see objects as close as 50cm away "without losing accuracy or precision."

Ballmer announced that Siemens, Citi, Boeing, American Express, Unilever, United Health Group, Mattel and Toyota are just some of the companies Microsoft have been working with to bring their Kinect ideas to life in revolutionary new ways.

The Kinect for Windows hardware and software will be available in 12 countries (United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom).

Kinect for Windows will carry a suggested US retail price of $249 (Amazon.com is already taking pre-orders) and we can expect a limited quantity to be available at launch.

Ballmer reminded the crowd of the 'Kinect Effect' and that Microsoft have shipped a staggering 18 million Kinects since the Xbox peripheral went on sale just a little over a year ago.

As previously reported, Microsoft are working with a wide range of companies and developers to create a great set of tools and APIs (application programming interface). To-date they have received more than 200 applications from top companies in more than 20 countries spanning 25 unique industries, eager to explore the possibilities of Kinect beyond Xbox 360.

For example, in Spain Tedesys is using Kinect technology in an operating room to help doctors navigate MRIs and CAT scans with a wave of their hand.

At Royal Berkshire Hospital, rehabilitation therapists are making Kinect an important part of the rehabilitation process for stroke and other brain injury patients.
