Cholesterol lowering drugs no benefit to those without heart disease

" the statin trials [that is studies of statin drugs used to lower cholesterol] of people without existing heart disease showedno reduction in deaths or serious health events, despite the small drop in heart attacks," notes the cover story in BusinessWeek from January 17th, 2008.

"We should tell patients that the reduced cardiovascular risk willbe replaced by other serious illnesses," says Dr. John Abramson, clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School and author of "Overdosed America".

"Most people are taking something with no chance of benefit and a risk of harm,"says James Wright, MD.

Julian Whitaker, MD has also suggested that the statin drugs usedto lower cholesterol may increase the risk ofcongestive heart failure because they inhibit production of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10).

Because of this and because CoQ10 has been shown to reduce the progression of Parkinson's Disease, I think these drugs should not be given to Parkinson's patients, and, in fact, the drugs may increase risk of the Parkinson's.

As far as I know,niacin is the only cholesterol-lowering agent that has evenbeen shown to reducethe total risk of death.

(rosuvastatin)
Mevacor
(lovastatin)
Lescol (fluvastatin)

If I were me, the only cholesterol-lowering agent I would take is niacin, which I do.

If you are a doctor who prescribes these drugs, I would read this article carefully, and look into using niacin instead.

Thanks, I have been looking for that Business Week article to pass around, now I have it! I am one who has suffered damage from that drug.. I have lost a lot of faith in the medicall community for being so easily lead around and taking the word of those who profit rather than the people they treat. Attitudes are changing and people ARE waking up!
