I had heard that Dave could no longer sing the song because it was too sad. (Reference forgotten.) Martin is wonderful! I really prefer the album (Songs of Faith and Devotion) version best because I don't care for the choir. I was sad they put the choir version on their Singles 86-98 double album. Anyway, brilliant song. They are Depeche Mode after all!

I remember listening to Depeche Mode for the first time thinking "this is music with the highest level of technology built into it with all the advanced sound systems built in it." that was 24 years ago.
