How to Upgrade iPhone 3gS & iPhone 4 to Custom 4.3.1 Firmware Preserving your baseband

This video is about Upgrading your iPhone 3gS or iPhone 4 in such a way that their baseband remain unchanged so that we can easily Unlock our devices by installing Ultrasn0w at the end. Things required is obviously Redsnow which will be used to put our devices in Pwned DFU state.

The only trick is to browse Official 4.3.1 firmware in Redsnow and then use iTunes to Upload a Custom 4.3.1 firmware.

IMPORTANT: After above Custom firmware file is uploaded according to your device, then simply open Cydia and install "Ultrasn0w". You will be fully Unlocked this time. Now you can use your UnOfficial sim card in your respective devices.

Note 1: Get MMS Settings for Tmobile/Simple Mobile by adding source in Cydia " http://beta.leimobile.com/repo/ " Then install "T-Mobile MMS Fix/Simple Mobile MMS". Reboot now. Then go to your 'settings' on your iPhone then 'general' then 'Network' then 'Cellular Data Network'. Here enter these settings just under MMS http://twitpic.com/3gcu5t (For T-mobile) and http://twitpic.com/4ouazg (For Simple Mobile). Leave everything else Blank. Now Reboot. Eventually your MMS settings will look like this as shown in this short clip http://www.twitvid.com/1IOGK

Note 2: GET YOUR APN SETTINGS by going to this website from your Safari Browser on your iPhone www.unlockit.co.nz Then Press Continue and then hit Custom APN. Now choose your Carrier. When Carrier is chosen then press Create Profile. Then hit Install. Done.

Note 3: (ONLY iPhone 4 Users): This video is for unlockers. The custom firmware used here are 'hacktivated' and you will NOT get a service if you use these with official sim cards on your iPhone 4. You will have to use Pwnagetool (MAC) or Snowbreeze (WINDOWS) to make your own custom 4.3.1 firmware and make sure to Uncheck 'Activate iPhone' option when you make a custom firmware using pwnagetool or snowbreeze. Then upload that on your iPhone. You will get your reception back on iPhone 4.

I followed all the steps and when i go to restore from itunes after its done loading the prepare to restore it says "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1600). PLEASE HELP

@iJbreak Download 'TinyUmbrella' . Save your SHSH through tinyumbrella. You will see the versions for which your SHSH blobs are saved. You can only custom restore to those versions that you see inside TinyUmbrella.

@rattleadi Factory Unlock will cost you a fortune ($180). But you can still do a Hardware Unlock by using a 'Gevey Sim' available at Applenberry(dot)com. If you are located in UK then buy this sim from 'Rebel'

hey, emac. You're good buddy. Thanks for sharing. I was hesitant with the upgrade from 5.16(base...) runing on 3.1.3, but everything went just fine. One question i do have for you is that you mentioned some issues with the custom firmware 4.3.1 that are currently happening. Can you tell us what are some of those "bugs"??? I just undated my device so I wanna be aware of them before they(bugs) show themselves.

@voteboo If you are an Unlocker then 'Ultrasn0w' on 4.3/4.3.1 will have some issues till DevTeam fixes it. It should be done very shortly.

great video. Does anyone know how I can fix my Iphone 3g? Its stuck on the boot logo for 5 minutes then the "download circle" shows up on the lower part of the apple symbol. Then the phone restarts its self and the process starts over again until the battery dies. My computer will not register the Iphone but it will register other Iphones. I do not get a option in my computer under the hardware>device manager section. Iphone will charge but no charge symbol shows up.

I followed your instructions to the point of hitting Shit+Restore, browsed the Custom 4.3.1 ipsw file. iTunes begins to extract the software and after that an error window pops up that says: iPhone cannot be restored. unkown error (3194). What can I do now? My phone still is in DFU mode...
