The Patong Municipality comes up with beach re-regulations hoping to boost a good image for beach, our special report has more:
Attracting many visitors from all around the world all year round, due to its amenities and natural beauty, Patong beach also attracts many businesses to exploit the situation, leading to the local government to re-set the beach regulations as one of its main policies, as Pian Keesin, Mayor of Patong Municipality explained: " I can say that tourism operators understand more of our policy in beach regulations. We've invited them to discuss and explain that if we do not seriously regulate or look after the beach, tourists will disappear. We have to understand that tourists have great choices here with other beaches and outlying islands."
The redevelopment and regulations plan includes controlling the number of beach umbrellas to be under 2,000 along the 3 kilometre beach, the beach massages services to meet standard requirements, as well as building another road to ease the traffic that the vibrant tourist location is now facing. Not only are the laws or regulations being redesigned, but the local government is also seeking tourism businesses' help to keep the beach clean and tidy. This includes beach chair and massage operators, who agree to help like these ones: Beach umbrella operator "I contribute to the beach tidiness and cleanliness. I have a large number of repeat guests. We all help clean it by collecting garbage and cigarette butts every afternoon." Masseur: "We masseurs help with garbage collecting, to make sure that the massage beds are in pleasant condition." The business or water activity zoning is also taking place to ensure that businesses, swimmers and the general public or tourists can share the resources. Some zones are boating area, swimming area, and sea plane landing area, to protect people for safety and protect the natural resources. These all gear towards the tourism and hospitality services and image that Phuket needs to provide.
