Roads minister Franklin Bett has directed that all road projects in the larger Muranga district be terminated following a row between Muranga county council and the Roads ministry. The agitated minister spoke in Othaya during a tour of roads projects in the area. He accused the county council of sabotaging the construction work along the Gakonya-Mukurweini road by ordering that the contractor pays a levy of 10,000 shillings per every 10 tonnes of soil excavated from the road reserves. He also directed that all contractual claims by the road contractors be paid by the county council for the 2.9 billion road projects. The minister noted that he had consulted the Attorney General on the matter arguing that the council had no legal basis to charge the contractor cess on operations on land acquired by the government. The infuriated minister also directed the Permanent Secretary Michael Kamau to withhold all fuel levy disbursements to Muranga country council until the issues were ironed out.
