An audio off-the-air recording, made while the program was being televised, this is the Jimmy Giuffre Three segment from 'The Sound Of Jazz', carried on CBS-TV, 8 December 1957, in the series 'The Seven Lively Arts'; technical details of the recording are given in the Description accompanying my 'Count Basie [2of2]' upload.
The segment begins with host John Crosby's introduction and Giuffre's comments about his music. Then Giuffre (photo) on saxophone and clarinet, Jim Hall on guitar, and Jim Atlas on string bass perform Giuffre's composition 'The Train And The River'.
Critic Jack Gould's New York Times review next day (a clipping shown in my video) called the audio portion of the program "a joy to the ear". I believe this and the other 'Sound Of Jazz' off-the-air recordings I posted, without noise or scratchiness and without artificial level changes caused by automatic gain control (AGC), convey that "joy"-- even though without the in-studio visual element.
Thanks for sharing such interesting material. Great stuff.
