UPDATE - Instead of mounting the Recovery HD, just hold down Command + R when booting up and the recovery HD will load.

Steve Jobs said in an email that you would have to clean install first with Snow Leopard, and then update to Lion, but Mac OS X Lion actually has a recovery mode where you can erase your drive using disk utility, and then reinstall Lion. A written post on how to do this can be found here - http://cl.ly/8U54

Terminal 1: diskutil list
Terminal 2: diskutil mount /dev/disk0s#

  • If I do this, am I going to loose all my data?

  • @A98Clan Yes.

  • Volume on disk0s3 timed out waiting to mount

    What to do?

  • @DoberFrann Restart holding Command + R. It will bring it up. I did this video before Apple released the easy way to do this.

  • Update! Apple released the easy way to access this on their site. Instead of doing all the terminal stuff to mount the Recovery HD, just restart your computer and hold down Command + R. That will bring up Recovery HD.

  • did you start this video on snow leopard or lion

  • @mambo087 So what did you do? I didnt buy lion from the app store either. I got it from a friend... What actually happened to your hard drive?

  • @TheDanStratton That ended a bit fast. You're logged in as the recovery HD, and you do what to what volume? And how do you then go about installing lion? I mean, I already have lion installed but never "clean installed" it. If I do this, will I be losing a Hard Drive? Or what happens at the end of your video when you say "clear that HD, hit x, and reinstall lion"? In Disk Utilities I have a Fujitsu HD and a Macintosh HD. Where do I clean install it and what do I do to the other HD? THanx

  • Thanks man ;-)

  • @TheDanStratton have you made a new video about the easy way to do it?

  • Have problem with Disk Utility. Wanted to erase my main HD, but couldn't, because I got an error. Something like this: Can't erase HD, because it's active. Is it possible, that Disk Utility is stored on this main HD, which means that Disk Utility would erase itself?

  • Perfect !! Thanks !

  • Thank you. Was helping my

  • I did this but when I tried to re install lion it said its gonna send my serial to apple so I clicked yes... Then I got a error saying it won't work.... Plzz help... I need my Mac

  • hye there...where we need to reinstalling the os x lion?...is it into macintosh hd or recovery hd?...when i boot up my iMac to reinstall, the recovery hd is locked...is it normal?...

  • HEY!

Installing Windows using BootCamp by Mac OSX Lion!

    I NEED LION!

  • is it recommended? and why?

  • @Armaanl1 yes, go and backup them using Time machine or manually backup

  • He wasn't wrong Lion boot is ONLY for MacBook Air models. NOT iMac or MacBook Pro.

  • Will I lose my Data ??

  • i just used migration assistant from my old mac to my macbook air and it is really wasting battery quickly. i went to some websites and found one the said if i clean install lion that it will make my battery last longer. i don't know if this will erase my battery or not? could someone plz respond if they know this anwer. thank you

  • thx dude thats make me feel better :)

  • So when u reinstall it will it delete the stuff that u had, but can u still use the USB to get your apps back and will they work? Please reply

  • can i dirty install Mac OS X Lion?

  • Yes if you mount the hard drive but no if you mount a donkey.

  • hey would this work without the cd? and only with the upgrade that i can buy from apple online? or do i need the actual cd

  • Your video is very instructive, but you should've mentioned that this is for those who actually bought the copy of OSX Lion from Apple. I didn't and now im stuck with a erased hard drive.

  • Once I boot on Recovery HD and go to disk utilities, on the left i get a hard drive named after the make of the hard drive (my case toshiba) and right below it is the Macintosh HD, if I select the whole hard drive will it erase the Recovery partition too?
