Correction, Billy Redden doesn't really play, but I saw a pic of him and assumed he did; he was holding a banjo in the pic.

Yes, he does actually play. Still does today, too. Saw a pic of him online somewhere today, still looks pretty much the same. But that is not him playing the song heard, Weissburg and Mandell recorded it for the movie.
