I played Warcraft 3 and in the night elf campaign (its the original Warcraft 3 not Frozen Throne) he gets released from his prison, helps the night elves kill some demons but when he is about to destroy the Skull of Gul'dan he takes its powers instead wich makes him half Noght Elf and half Demon. Malfurion Stormrage (his brother) sends him away because he gave himself into the Demon powers. Maybe thats why they call him the betrayer

I know he didn't summon them but he did fiegn an alliegence with them "Illidan was eventually brought before Sargeras himself, who quickly discovered the night elf's plan to obtain the Demon Soul for the Legion. Sargeras was pleased with this plan, and gave Illidan a "gift" in return for his allegiance." he helped them - with the intention of eventually betraying them in order to make a new well.

No, he never helped summon them. What had happened, was that while Illidan was out hunting those guys in Knaak's book, Xavier was summoning. After the Legion came Illidan used sorcery to kick their ass. That's when he was an addict, and fucked up the new well. That's why he was a traitor.
