I have a mid sized cold water tank for some HUGE goldfish.
Even though these are expensive compared to other lighting, they are very low power consuming (green), the light quality is great, LEDs last forever and don't break, and they don't create enough heat to screw with the temperature.
For example, I have 4 light modules; 2 x 10,000k Daylight, and 2 x 460nm Actinic blue, and 10,000k/Actinic combination strips. And no other lighting on a 30 gal show.
That's a total of 16 watts power consumption. I only have the combo strips on during the day when I am away (8 watts), and turn on the 10,000k Daylight strips when I am home. This compares to 55 watts for a compact fluorescent or even more for a double tube standard florescent. You'll save money in electric bills eventually.
The light quality is clean, and shimmers from surface ripples.
I won't need to be replacing florescent tubes. And they are safer because they can't break and make a mess or get into the tank.
And this summer my peak tank temps were easily several degrees below what they were when I used CFL fixtures.
Tinko Is so HUGE!
