This song reminds me of the show "Millenium", the relationship between the father and daughter Frank Black and Jordan, and the concluding show (especially the last 15 minutes). For those unfamiliar, it was a dark series, set in Seattle, and Jordan had the same "curse" as Frank - a type of insight and connection to the minds of criminals. In the end, together they flee Seattle driving into the countryside. Thats why I used the driving movie clips. While the sun is a metaphor for redemption, the implication of my vid is that while the sun is seen by an individual in that way, the redeemer may be right beside you (Jordan) .

The lyricist Lou (Louise Ann) Rhodes was writing about her son (she has two). "Wings" refers to the unbridled joy and unconditional bond between mother and child. "Revel in the songs" - relive a part of childhood emotions. "My (little) angel Gabriel." No mention of the accuracy of the name.
And, as requested, "relinquished" in this song-sense means giving in to the emotion - dont fight it. In some sense, Gabriel could be a lament inside a depression. Or a melancholic position. Or simply a realization of the value of a child.

Some people think this is truly about the religious angel Gabriel. Others believe it is about a lover. After reading the lyrics, I have a slightly different take on it, based on a few interesting lines of lyric:

-Revel in the songs that he sings
-He's been there since the very start
-Bless the day he came to be
-Angel's wings carried him to me
-But I want his wings.

Sounds like a child to me.
