The H4 subway cars, built by Hawker Siddeley in 1974, made its final run during the morning rush hour on January 27, 2012 and retired at the age of 38.

Known for its unique quirks, these trains often caught the attention of non-transit enthusiasts while in its last days of service:
-ceiling fans blowing air from the roof
-ultra comfortable faux-leather bench seats
-psychedelic orange/beige/brown interior styling from the 1970s

Unlike its successors, the H4s will not have a second life in a different city, with some being converted to TTC maintenance trains and others sent directly to scrap. Only successor H5 (1976) and H6 (1986) subway trains will be rebuilt by General Electric in the USA before being shipped over the Atlantic Ocean to serve the blue line of LAMATA's Ekorail in Lagos, Nigeria.

The Toronto media outlets gave a silent farewell to these H4 subway cars. (I'm surprised they even covered it at all, given the GM Fishbowl's bus retirement just a month ago received no media attention at all and are far more iconic in a North American context)

  • Haha and this anchor Mike Wise talks like he knows the H4s well.

I always see him on the subway heading north at night, immediately after the 11pm newscast.
