  • by last name is bonham

  • @RazrHack i know its gotten lazy over the yrs.kits seem to be getting smaller.toms shallower ..mikes are getting smaller..all contributes to a crap sound..its all clicky sounding now.id never dream of using triggers on my kit..

  • @nastymonsters2 Fucking triggers suck, I agree. But it's not just that, it's how drums are tuned these days, too. Long gone are the days of drummers like Bonham and Buddy Rich where a drum actually sounded like a drum.

  • @RazrHack thts triggers for you...they should be outlawed

  • @RazrHack Some love ringing over tones & some preffer a thud sounding tom..When recording live sound for records a lot of ring is removed by editting.

I've tried tightly tune toms which are fine if you play jazz but rock tone needs that thud sound with little to no over tones...people use tape on their heads as well as drum heads with rings built into them to eliminate the overtones...

There is a clip on here of a drum tec showing a JB kit and how he tuned them for JB. Sounded bad to me.

  • @JBL8863 Oh no, I've heard his drum sound uncompressed and un-miced. Real ringy and with overtones that would blow you away, not really what you want as a drummer. But it's still to me the ideal drum sound - Bonham really knew how to tune and that ring is just perfect to my ears and perfect for Bonham's style.

  • @RazrHack Make no mistake in thinking that everything you hear on Youtube has been compressed including the original recordings in this JHB..

A huge part of his sound was due to mic positions hence the sound processing your hearing in this recording...His set probably sounded horrible live without being mic up.

I have seen the cheapest drum kits sound amazing when they are mic up and ran into a sound board, tweeks made to every mic can make a cheap drum kit sound like a million bucks.

  • is that him making all those weired sounds

  • I've tried tuning my kit Bonham-style. I don't have the same sizes on my drums, so it's VERY far from perfect. Out of tune and sounds a bit like a mess, but I'd rather have my sound than have the shitty, dull "clicking" sound that drumsets seem to have become since Bonham died.
