This is a video slideshow celebrating 250 Years of Robert Burns Jan. 25, 2009. It is thought that Burns may have written this as a celebration of his 28th birthday. The video contains Burns material set to his Autobiographical song, Rantin' Rovin' Robin. Singing is Sylvia Barnes with The Battlefield Band. The photos in the last quarter I took of the Burns House and his tomb in Dumfries, Scotland in 2007. To learn more about the wonderful recordings of the Battlefield Band follow this link!

Rantin, Rovin Robin

There was a lad was born in Kyle,
But what na day o' what na style,
I doubt it's hardly worth the while
To be sae nice wi' Robin.

Chorus
Robin was a rovin boy,
Rantin, rovin, rantin, rovin,
Robin was a rovin boy,
Rantin, rovin Robin!

Our monarch's hindmost year but ane
Was five-and-twenty days begun,
'Twas then a blast o' Janwar' win'
Blew hansel in on Robin!

Chorus

The gossip keekit in his loof,
Quo' she: - 'Wha lives'll see the proof,
This waly boy will be nae coof:
I think we'll ca' him Robin.'

Chorus

'He'll hae miisfortunes great an' sma',
But ay a heart aboon them a'.
He'll gie his Daddie's name a blaw,
We'll a' be proud o' Robin.'

Chorus

'But sure as three times three mak nine
I see by ilka score and line,
This chap will dearly like our kin',
Sae leeze me on thee, Robin!'

Chorus

'Guid faith', quo' she, 'I doubt you, Stir,
Ye'll gar the lassies lie aspar,
But twenty fauts ye may hae waur -
So blessins on thee, Robin.'

Chorus

  • Thanks for the tribute.

I remember singing this at his 200th Anniversary in the Drill Hall in Newall Terrace, Dumfries.

  • @killiekentman This is Sylvia Barnes, once of the band Kentigern years ago.

  • No, I'm a Scottish exile in England, which is why I'm so sentimental about Scottish songs I expect. Are you of Scottish descent?

  • You haven't at all. This is fun. Are you in Scotland?

  • Thank you that would be lovely. I hope I haven't put you on the spot though.

  • Let's see what we can do here I am making more videos this week.

  • @Gimmer3 Sorry, didn't realise. I've made that sound like a major hint now.

  • I have Scotch Measure and Kentigern.
