George V, King of the United Kingdom, the Dominions and Emperor of India came to the throne in 1910 and was devoted to the paramount task of keeping the British Empire together. He was trying to work a compromise to give home rule to Ireland when World War I broke out. During the war he set an example of sacrifice for the country and courage in the face of bombing raids at home and huge losses at the front. His was the last reign to see large expansion of the British Empire as a result of the victory in World War I. It was also at that time he changed the name of the Royal house from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor. His reign saw the passage of the Statute of Westminster, the first Royal Christmas speech and the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. He was a dedicated, hard working and committed constitutional monarch. He died in 1936 at the age of 70.

@RichardElden: Ok, so why did George V. withdraw the offer when his own government initially did offer asylum?? Was it inconvenient to receive the (ex)-Tsar Nicholas II. at that time??

Nice video alongside a very british song! King George V. looks like a twin brother of Tsar Nicholas II. of Russia; in the end they were cousins.........It's a pity that the British Government did not do more to save their WWI ally Nicholas II.; it could have arranged matters to send the Romanovs to Canada or Australia until WWI was finished and then grant them asylum in the UK!!
